Putting the Pieces Together
Have you ever wondered what could be made using recycled cardboard and a laser cutter? This past winter quarter, the students of Art 95 set out to find an answer to that question, and came up with a creative response: a larger-than-life chess set!
The pieces to this environmentally-friendly set were inspired by the distinctive geometry of campus buildings. During an intensive two-week design period, students in this course not only collaborated with each other, but they also contacted Facilities Management for assistance in
supplying the essential material—recycled cardboard. 2 truck-loads of material was delivered from all around campus, and when the project was completed, Facilities Management collected and recycled all extra scrap waste—leaving no cardboard behind!
UCI recycles 250 tons of cardboard annually, and Facilities Management was excited about showcasing unique ideas for repurposing! By addressing the question of sustainability in this creative manner, hopefully this project will inspire other UCI students to use recycled material in their art projects!
